Emerging from Winter with Birthday Indulgences

usps_certificate_full First, I’m shamelessly patting myself on the back today. Check out my United States Power Squadron certificate. I just received “Senior Member” and I have what is called a “Full Certificate”… little stickers for every course they teach. It took about 4 years and provides a great boater education. There’s one little square left open (placed the logo on it for the photo) – for the “life member” sticker I’ll be eligible for in 2033. Check back then, for more back-patting…

Next week is the Starbucks shareholders meeting. No businessman is more inspiring than CEO Howard Schultz, so I make sure to hear him every year. It is also HP (HPQ) meeting day, held in the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. I wish I could be in 2 places at once. These two companies are my favorite stock trades in support of my beloved boat.

April 5-6 is the 50th annual Merrie Monarch Hula Competition in Hilo. It is a real bargain to fly over on Allegiant Airlines from Bellingham (they also have wonderful fares to California destinations). But the event was sold out long ago, so I’ll watch it on my laptop. For a decade I was a member of a hula halau and made a serious study of hula, chant, and ipu. Now I’m learning the ukulele, just for fun! The ukulele is my birthday present to myself, my first Amazon “gold box” deal. I thought taking up the ukulele would be a nice contrast to my electronics experiments.

The 2013 Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show is coming to Jack London Square in Oakland, California, April 11–14. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to attend, but I am signed up for this:

designwest is the annual technical conference and expo for “electronics design engineers, entrepreneurs, and technology professionals who create products with electronic content.” There are very few women presenters – even less than we had at American Math Society conferences –  but I’ll be attending the keynote by Mayim Bialik (Big Bang Theory);  April 24 in San Jose, CA.

This is my time of year, when I feel lots of excitement and enthusiasm for many types of events. I encourage you to move out from the winter gray and find your own list of exciting events to welcome Spring, to prepare mentally and physically for boating season. TIP: Start by walking in a St. Patrick’s Day parade.
